Wiki, Don’t Lose That Number
By Chris O’Neal
Tiny but useful on using wikis. Couple of good ideas in the list presented including: “Have students use a wiki space to plan the details of a field trip to make it as educationally fulfilling as possible.”
A great many examples are also provided by readers comments (blogging at its best):
For example here’s some great examples of wikis in school age teaching: (have a look at the wikis you can see how the pages are evolving by using the history tab).
“I also started two other wikis with my students. Currently they are working on the topic of cyberbullying (stopcyberbullies ) and are conducting interviews of students and teachers about 5 areas of cyberbullying. These interviews will be loaded to the wiki and it should be complete by the end of May. The last and most exciting wiki we are currently working on involves the history of our school system. My students are conducting interviews of past graduates using digital recorders. Some are getting interviews from people who graduated in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Wikis are a great resource for any oral history project and great way to share stories!! You can check out this work in progress at Voices from the Schoolhouse. As you can see me and my students love to wiki!!! This should be completed by the end of May as well.”

And also “My students (5th-6th) have done 4 wikis this year and I think each served its purpose. The first one was a culimating project on a study of Frank Lloyd Wright and the book The Wright 3 by Blue Balliett. The second was a project for a research project on Unsolved Mysteries. The third and fourth were used as research organizers for a major grant project. I’ve written about the wikis and my students opinions on my blog. You can see our GIANT grant project (under construction til May 30).” Primerily the students go away and research specific topics, gathering evidence for arguments together with weblinks and pictures (of which there are many) and then create specific areas within the wikis to house their topic.
